Initially, some people thought that give, subtract, divide & multiply were the four, but the other 3 functions can be achieve by a mix of add, sign change, shifting registers, etc.





For example, to subtract, the computer simply designates a number as negative by flipping the sign bit. Then count.



To multiply & divide, the number is shifted up and down as needed.
