i would reccomend an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor. They are relatively cheap if you shop around on newegg and ebay. I have a 4200+ and it works awfully well.
I would prefer AMD Athlon 64 Dual core but single core is not fruitless either. Sockets 754, 939, but the best is AM2

Choose the Price/Performance Index surrounded by the Choose benchmark section. It's pretty darn accurate, although the newest CPUs are not scheduled. If you want to run a specific game, you can look at that benchmark, too.



Check out Anandtech and TomsHardware for CPU overclockability, too. Some of the fresh Core2 Duo chips can be almost doubled in speed in need any extra cooling equipment.
