Upgrading to Intel Core 2 Duo E6600?

I am thinking something like upgrading from a Pentium D 3.0Ghz, to an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. I just want to know if upgrading my MOBO is basic. The MOBO came beside a customized PC from Dell (XPS 400). I'm assuming since the Pentium D is dual-core, I should be able to upgrade minus any problems, but I am a real noob when it comes to this caring of stuff. Please give me your input, gratitude!

Upgrading to Intel Core 2 Duo E6600?

Dell uses proprietary motherboards that tend to be less flexible when it comes to upgrades. Check the date of your BIOS. If it is early than 1st quarter of 2006, it might not support Core 2 Duo which was one and only released last year.
Check what motherboard your laptop has you may know how to find this out from the website.Check what processors the mother board will support.the Internet has plenty of information if you hold looking.
First generation Socket 775 Pentium 4/D/XE motherboards might not be compatible next to the Core 2 Duo because the power requirements are different. There are a variety of chipsets that support the Intel Core 2 Duo, including Intel's own 945-series, 965-series and the 975X Express. Third f¨ote chipsets include the VIA PT890, PT880 Ultra, SiS's 662, nVIDIA's nForce 570/590 SLI and nForce 650 Ultra 650i/680i SLI.

Again though just because a motherboard have one of those chipsets does not mean it's compatible beside the Core 2 Duo processor, so check before mitt if you are worried about compatibility issues!
