Wanting to buy a fresh CPU for my behind the times mobo.?

My sound out is how do I know what cpu would be compatible with my mature mobo.

mobo specs:

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe (approx. 3-4 years old)

Mobo comes with a surface mount 462-pin Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) socket designed for the AMD Athlon(tm) AMD Athlon (tm) XP, and the AMD Duron(tm) processors.

**Do not use processors beside core speeds of less than 1GHz on this motherboard.

My current cpu is an AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ 2.16 GHz

Other current specs:

160 GB IDE HD (in the process of installing another 320 GB SATA HD)

2 Gigs RAM not sure on the specifications (DDR something or other) -- I know it's 2 x 512's and 1x1 see stick

GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 AGP

------------------------------...

So really I was looking at unmarked CPU's on newegg and I'm not sure how to tell if my board will be compatible or if it's basically too old and outdated.

Any direction you can give on what to do at this point ?
